Understanding the result

  • Aspect ratio: the proportional relationship between width and height. A 1920×1080 image has a 16:9 aspect ratio. Changing only the width while locking aspect ratio automatically adjusts the height proportionally.
  • Upscaling (making an image larger than the original) reduces quality — pixels are interpolated, making the image appear blurry or pixelated. Downscaling always maintains quality better than upscaling.
  • File size after resizing depends on dimensions AND format. A 500×500 PNG is typically larger than a 500×500 JPG at equivalent quality.

FAQ

Does resizing an image reduce its file size?

Usually yes — smaller dimensions mean fewer pixels to store, which generally means a smaller file. However, the format also matters. A 500×500 PNG can still be larger than a 1920×1080 JPG because PNG is lossless and JPG uses compression.

Can I resize an image without losing quality?

Downscaling (reducing dimensions) preserves quality well. Upscaling (increasing dimensions beyond the original) always reduces quality because the tool must invent pixel data that wasn't there. For best results, always start from the highest resolution original available.

What is the difference between resize and crop?

Resizing changes the dimensions of the entire image while keeping all the content. Cropping cuts away part of the image to focus on a specific area. To resize to an exact size without distortion, you often need to crop first then resize.
