About this tool

Sales tax, VAT, and GST change the final price customers pay. This calculator handles both tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive scenarios so you can work backward from a shelf price or forward from a net amount.

Enter the base amount and tax rate to see the tax component and total. Switch modes when a receipt shows a tax-included total and you need the pre-tax figure for accounting or invoicing.

Common use cases

  • Adding sales tax to a quoted net price at checkout
  • Extracting VAT from a tax-inclusive invoice total
  • Verifying register or e-commerce cart calculations
  • Preparing expense reports with correct net and tax splits

How to use

  1. Choose tax-exclusive (add tax) or tax-inclusive (extract tax) mode.
  2. Enter the amount and the tax rate as a percentage.
  3. Review the tax amount and final total side by side.
  4. Switch modes to cross-check figures from receipts or quotes.

Understanding the result

  • Tax-exclusive mode: total = base + (base × rate). The tax line is a straight percentage of net price.
  • Tax-inclusive mode: net = total ÷ (1 + rate/100). Tax is embedded in the gross figure, not added on top.
  • Small rate changes have proportional impact—verify whether your jurisdiction uses compounded or flat rules for special cases.
  • Round currency to two decimals for display; penny differences may appear versus POS systems that round per line.

FAQ

What is the difference between tax-inclusive and tax-exclusive?

Tax-exclusive adds tax on top of the net price. Tax-inclusive means the total already contains tax and you back out the net amount.

Can I use this for VAT and GST?

Yes. Enter your jurisdiction's standard rate. Multi-rate or exempt items need separate line calculations.

How do I find the pre-tax price from a tax-included total?

Use tax-inclusive mode: divide the gross total by (1 + rate/100) to get the net amount; the difference is tax.

Does this handle multiple tax layers?

This tool applies a single rate. Stacked taxes (e.g. state plus local) require combining rates or calculating sequentially.
